PLACEMENTS FOR NEXT YEAR RELEASED
Teachers have begun to pull students into the halls to discuss what course would be best for them next year. These course selections come with their victories and disappointments. Many students now believe that the difficulty of a course is largely reliant on the teacher that you get, which has led the student senate to act. See what steps they’re taking in this article by Abby Goldman.
TWO NEW ENGLISH CLASSES
Two new classes, Journalism and Women’s Literature, have just opened up. Mr Guanci, an English teacher and the faculty advisor of The Forum, will offer Journalism next Fall as an honors/high honors course. In addition, the new Women’s Literature class, taken as either honors or high honors, was proposed by many students and the members of STEW. This class talks about how women have been represented and how society has (or hasn’t) understood gender norms.
THE CHORUS CONCERT PERFORMED AT LSRHS
Last week’s chorus event was quite the occasion–they never fail to disappoint. From Curtis, to Lincoln, and now to LS, the performance included all choirs singing 1-2 songs. Performances in between included songs from the singers A*Choired Taste, Chora de Chicas, and some singing valentines. Popular songs were featured as well, such as Defying Gravity, My Girl, Jealousy Jealousy, and more.
Now, onto some international news.
INTERNATIONAL HEADLINES
Iran Attack
On February 28th, U.S. and Israel military forces jointly began attacks on Iran. Later that day, Iranian supreme leader Ali Khamenei and many other military leaders were killed. In the midst of this, a girl’s elementary school located near a military complex was struck, with Iranian state media reporting 180 casualties. Both Israel and the U.S. deny involvement in this incident. In response to the strikes, Iran began retaliating against other countries that have had no affiliation to this conflict, such as an Iranian missile that was intercepted over Turkey. As of the evening of March 9th, 9 U.S. soldiers have died in the conflict. Polling shows that 56% of Americans oppose U.S. involvement, however poll aggregators show Trump’s net approval rating improving by around 0.4% to a net +12.4 disapproval. On March 8th, Mojtaba Khamenei, the son of Ali Khamenei, was confirmed as the new leader. The U.S., Israel, and Iran have all pushed that this war will continue for weeks, at a minimum.
Attempted Protest Bombing
Last Saturday, March 7th, an anti-Muslim protest was taking place outside of NYC Mayor Zohran Mamdani’s residence. During their demonstration, protestors clashed with counterprotestors, and two explosives were thrown. The FBI and NYPD are actively investigating this attack, and Mayor Zohran Mamdani has condemned both the anti-Muslim protest and the attack. Two suspects are in custody, one who hurled both devices and one who carried them. The NYPD has said that the explosives did not detonate, and has reported that the suspects are affiliated with ISIS, a terrorist organization.
