As AI becomes more and more involved in society, its role in education remains controversial. Nonetheless, education and school companies are implementing this new technology into their systems. Many tools that students have used in the past to study and learn have turned over a new AI-powered leaf, foreshadowing an AI-dominated education system in the future. To understand the changes and evolution these companies have made, listed below are the notable tools and how they can impact our educational system.
- Khan Academy: Khan Academy is an education organization intended to help kids in all topics, but is especially focused on math. For many years since its founding in 2008, Khan Academy has been using videos and quizzes to help advance student’s skills. Recently, Khan Academy announced Khanmingo, an AI-powered tool designed for teachers to optimize and make their lessons more efficient. While Khan Academy was originally a tool to help independent students learn, the introduction of Khanmingo and artificial intelligence tools to help teachers could be the start of an AI-run classroom.
- Duolingo: Duolingo is an educational tool primarily used for the learning of languages. Duolingo was founded in 2012 and used gamified learning to teach languages. When Duolingo took a hard shift into an AI-First strategy, the app encountered more errors and repetitive lessons. As the company further leaned into AI, they began replacing workers with AI. As a result, many Duolingo users were displeased with the state of the app and many began to stop using the app. Duolingo’s AI based vision of a future warns of AI domination, not just in the education field, but in the entire job market.
- Quizlet: Quizlet is a study tool based on flashcards and other quiz-based study strategies. It was originally a digital replacement for the old-fashioned physical flashcards, but recently it has introduced new AI tools intended to make studying easier and more efficient. Tools that create study guides and flashcards could be the nail in the coffin for traditional study methods and the transition into a new AI-ruled era of studying.
Old educational tools evolving is not the only change AI has made in the education industry. Many new tools and systems built on a foundation of AI have been developed to help students. Below is the list of the significant new tools that may impact the way students learn in the future.
- Notebook LM: Notebook LM is an AI-powered researcher assistant. Notebook LM was released in 2023. This AI tool uses the information one provided it with to create responses based on it. It can use a plethora of sources such as PDFs, google docs, websites, and videos. Notebook LM can discuss topics with the user and help them think through the subject. This AI tool aids in doing the “busy” work so the user can prioritize the focus of assignments. Notebook LM and other tools similar that automate the task of notetaking signify the possible irrelevance of traditional note taking in a future world.
- MagicSchool AI: MagicSchool AI is a tool intended to help teachers create lesson plans and manage schoolwork more effectively. Similar to Khanmingo, it is a tool intended for teacher use in optimizing the classroom. As tools that make teaching easier become more and more common, it is probable that schools will reevaluate their take on AI and its place within the classroom.
We have yet to see any of these new systems implemented at LS or widely used by the educational community, but as AI progresses, it becomes more and more likely that these systems will be utilized in schools including LS. While many believe that artificial intelligence’s effect on students is completely negative, tools based in AI could possibly change how education is handled in the near future. It would be drastic to abandon older methods of learning, it is possible that they will slowly fade in relevance, and in turn the education system could shift to a system heavily intertwined with AI.
