In the bustling halls of Lincoln-Sudbury Regional High School, amongst the flurry of students and teachers, there exists a silent force that ensures the smooth functioning of our campus. Behind the scenes, the Building and Grounds (B&G) staff works tirelessly, often unnoticed, to maintain the foundation upon which our academic and athletic endeavors thrive. An interview with Mr. Kevin Rossley, the head of our B&G team, gave great insight into the pivotal role they play in L-S.
Comprising three departments in one—custodial, grounds, and maintenance—the B&G crew oversees many essential tasks to the upkeep of our school. From tending to the exterior grounds, including parking lots, sidewalks, and athletic fields, to managing interior and exterior maintenance, their responsibilities are vast and varied. The B&G staff even takes care of necessary jobs outside of L-S such as delivering lunches to L-S Academy and bank runs, always being here to support the school community, and providing the services necessary for the school to function. They really do it all. Mr. Rossley emphasizes the unity of their team, aptly known as “B&G,” where mutual support is the cornerstone of their success. For Mr. Rossley and his team, every day presents a new set of challenges and triumphs. The unpredictability of their tasks keeps them on their toes, with emergencies often derailing their best-laid plans. Yet, they find joy in learning something new each day and contributing to the safety and functionality of our school community.
However, maintaining our school grounds and facilities is not without its hurdles. Aging equipment, some dating back twenty years, poses a constant challenge, requiring strategic planning and funding for upgrades. Despite facing such obstacles, the B&G crew remains committed to their mission, ensuring that our campus remains conducive to learning and growth. In addition to their regular duties, the B&G crew also spearheads special projects and initiatives aimed at enhancing our school environment. From preparing for town meetings to advocating for crucial upgrades like concrete stair replacements and lighting software enhancements, they tirelessly work towards improving our campus infrastructure for the benefit of the students and staff.
Reflecting on his tenure, Mr. Rossley recalls memorable experiences, particularly the helpful involvement of students in community service initiatives. Students who have volunteered over the summer or during the school year have contributed not only to the physical upkeep of our campus but have also fostered a sense of connection and responsibility within our school community. In light of their efforts, Mr. Rossley urges students and staff to support the B&G crew’s hard work by promoting health, safety, and cleanliness on campus. Simple acts, such as proper waste disposal and recycling, go a long way in helping the B&G crew maintain a conducive learning environment for all.
As custodians of our school’s legacy, the B&G crew embodies a wealth of institutional knowledge gathered over decades. Their hard work ensures that our facilities evolve alongside the changing needs of students and staff. With over thirty years of service, they stand as pillars of stability, providing invaluable support to our school community. In closing, Mr. Rossley emphasizes the critical role of the B&G crew, whose collective expertise far outweighs the sum of their individual efforts. As we navigate the ever-changing landscape of education, let us not forget the unsung heroes who work tirelessly behind the scenes, ensuring that our school remains a beacon of learning and growth for generations to come. On behalf of the entire school community, we extend our heartfelt gratitude to the building and grounds crew, whose unwavering dedication ensures that our learning environment thrives. We cannot imagine what our school experience would be like without their tireless efforts and commitment to excellence. Thank you for everything you do!
