With spring around the corner, spring sports are starting with a bang. With the successes of last year as motivation, students, coaches, and teachers are gearing up for a riveting season. Athletic Director Dan Lee, who has been with LS for two years, is excited for another thrilling season. He expressed his enthusiasm, stating, “I’m definitely excited for the spring season. It’s always a crazy season.” Mr. Lee’s passion for sports is deeply rooted in his own upbringing. As a child, he played a variety of sports, including soccer, baseball, tennis, and lacrosse. This diverse athletic background has given him a unique appreciation for all the spring sports offered at LS. He enjoys watching the softball games, as his daughters play the sport, as well as cheering on the tennis teams and rugby squads. LS is one of the few schools in the area to have both boys’ and girls’ rugby teams, which adds another layer of excitement to the spring season. The girl’s rugby team also has their annual Boston game, which he is very excited for.
The spring season at LS is unique in that it encompasses so many different sports, and traditionally, the LS teams perform quite well. Mr. Lee highlights the high caliber of talent across multiple disciplines, from track and field athletes to strong rugby and volleyball teams. He’s looking forward to the sailing team’s competitions in Cochituate, as well as the boys’ baseball team playing at Polar Park in Worcester, home of the Triple-A Red Sox. “We have some really high-level athletes,” Mr. Lee adds. As Mr. Lee enters his second year as athletic director at LS, he reflects on the differences between this season and the previous one. “The biggest change for me this year is that I have a much better understanding of how things operate at LS,” he notes. He mentioned how he now knows the leagues, field structure, and coaches better, which will certainly lead to an exciting season. The spring season at LS is one of the busiest, with multiple teams vying for attention and practice time. “We’re lucky that we have so much going on here at LS. Our setup is great because it allows me to bounce between all the different sports and see everything that’s happening,” Mr. Lee says.
Mr. Lee is optimistic about several teams’ prospects this spring. The softball team is preseason-ranked third in the state, while the girls’ and boys’ lacrosse teams are both ranked in the top 10. The boys’ volleyball team is also consistently a strong contender, and the baseball team is always a force to be reckoned with. Additionally, LS is welcoming several new coaches this spring, including a new girls’ lacrosse coach and a new boys’ tennis coach, “which is exciting,” Mr. Lee shares. He also mentioned how he’s been putting a big emphasis on helping LS athletes gain visibility, stating, “We do our best to promote our athletes through social media and local media outlets,” he explains. “Being part of a school like LS helps students get the exposure they need, in addition to their club sports.”
As the season gets underway, Lee’s optimism for the spring is clear. With talented athletes, strong teams, and new members of the coaching staff, there’s a lot to look forward to. And for the athletes at LS, Lee’s message is simple: enjoy the experience, play for the love of the sport, and make the most of your time here at LS. This spring season promises to be another memorable one, with LS athletes continuing their tradition of excellence and exciting events planned for the entire community. Whether you’re a player, a coach, or a fan, there’s plenty to look forward to in the coming months!
