In the midst of course selection season at LS, the English Department has added a new option to its offerings of semester courses.
The Science Fiction course is a semester course that will be taught in both the fall and spring. It will study literature in science fiction and its subgenres, including dystopian literature, space operas, first contact stories, and topics on artificial intelligence.
Possible novels to be taught include We Are Legion (We Are Bob), Children of Time, and Red Rising. However, the class will not be limited to novels and will also likely feature short stories and TV shows. The works studied in class will likely change from year to year.
“It’s a genre a lot of people look at and say it’s not literary or academic, but I think that there’s so much to be learned of it, so many great discussions about the way that our world works,” stated Mr. Wentworth, one of the teachers who will run the class.
The Science Fiction course was initially proposed by Mr. Wentworth several years ago. “I like to read lots of different genres, but at the end of the day… I’m sure that science fiction would be the genre that I’ve read the most,” he explained.
