The LS sailing team has had many coaches over the years, and this year, Mr. Sobkowitz has decided to have a turn. He had been the sailing coach once before, from 1997 to 2009, when he took over after being the assistant. Mr. Sobkowitz spoke of his sailing experience: “We had a sailboat from when I was a little kid. We sailed on Mystic Lake a lot as we lived in Winchester. First, we had this little board sailboat, and then we had a sunfish, and then when I was an adult, I bought a laser.”
For Sobkowicz, sailing is more than just a sport; it’s a connection to nature. “I just love the wind and how it’s just you, the wind, and the sailboat; it’s no motor or anything,” he shared. Coaching also offers him a different kind of fulfillment. “I just love the relationship you have with students as a coach, it is different than in a classroom,” he expressed. As for the upcoming season, he’s excited about “just meeting the new people and seeing what we can get out of people and try to win some races.” Overall, excited to meet the team and push them to succeed, Sobkowicz is ready for a competitive season.
