The tradition of Singing Valentines at LS is a program run through Concert Choir where students audition to be a part of a quartet. They travel around the school throughout Valentine’s Day and perform a variety of songs. Anybody can purchase a Singing Valentine, no matter if it’s for a crush, or just a friend. This is a great way that these dressed-up singers are able to bring joy and entertainment to teachers and students on this day of love! Most of the time, students send valentines to other students, but sometimes teachers get them as well if there is somebody that they want to recognize.
Mr. Bunting, the choral director, started this tradition in 2011 during his first year working at Lincoln Sudbury. He started this tradition because there were lots of high schools who participated in the program and he liked the idea. “It’s a fun program and a nice challenge for some of the singers to sing fun music,” Mr. Bunting explained. The singers audition and then practice up until February 14th to make it an awesome experience for the students receiving these songs. Mr. Bunting’s favorite part of the Singing Valentines is “hearing from and seeing students and staff members who have enjoyed the songs and had a nice musical surprise with positivity and joy.”
On Valentine’s Day, around four quartets go around the school and deliver, on average, 120 special surprises to students. The songs are mostly chosen by the quartets and change every year. Many of these songs are very popular and well loved. Depending on the song, the students or Mr. Bunting may change the arrangement, then coordinate the details of these performances. The love and care that singers put into their performances shines through to create a special experience for the whole school.
