On Saturday, December 14th, the Lincoln-Sudbury Warriors hockey teams had their season openers against the Concord-Carlisle Patriots in their annual Warriors 4 Warriors, Patriots 4 Patriots game. This event has been a highly attended game for the past 13 years, honoring the life of former LS boys’ hockey captain Scott Milley.
Milley gave his life to his country by joining the Army ROTC program and being commissioned to the 2nd Battalion, 30th Infantry Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team, and the 10th Mountain Division. He was later promoted to First Lieutenant, where he and his squad were deployed to Afghanistan.
On November 30th, 2010, Milley and his squad were caught in a shootout against Taliban insurgents, and he was shot and killed. At the young age of 23, Milley was buried with the honor of receiving a Bronze Star, Combat Infantryman’s Badge, and a Purple Heart, leaving behind the legacy of a hero.
This year, the LS hockey teams continued this lasting tradition by playing a set of three games, each one dedicated to Scott and his family. The boys’ JV team kicked off this Saturday evening with a 6-2 win in favor of LS. This game was closely followed by the LS girls’ team, who were able to bring the Milley Cup home again with an 8-1 win.
To finish off the night, Scott’s father, Steven Milley, came out on the ice with Scott’s mother, brother, and sister to deliver a remembrance speech that touched the hearts of many in the crowd. He reminisced about Scott and his dedication to both hockey and his country. Following this speech, the puck was dropped, and the game began. In a high-intensity game, the game clock ticked down to zero, ending the night with a final score of 3-0 for CC, taking home the Milley Cup once again.
