LS’ varsity girls volleyball team finished with an undefeated DCL season; this record was identical to the teams 22’-23’ record, only differing in league ranking by one position. With seven returning players, the two volleyball seasons are undeniably similar. Unlike two years ago when the team reached the finals, the road to the championship unfortunately came to an end in LS’ loss against their tough competitor, Acton-Boxborough.
Junior Sarah Poland shared her experience participating in both seasons, complementing the hitters’ “great connections with the setters,” as well as the team’s “strong serving, high energy, and incredible support between teammates.” These characteristics of the team are arguably what led LSGVVB to be ranked 3rd overall in Massachusetts’ Division 1, and shows how the team not only benefited from each player’s skill but also the unbreakable bond between the girls. Sarah also mentioned the team faced position switches and injuries, which proved to be difficult obstacles, yet “the team did very well adjusting to the adversity”.
Reflecting on the 22’-23’ season, Sarah recounted that the team’s success was mainly credited to the players actually on the court and consisted more of individual skill. Two years ago, the team had players committed to Division 1 college teams; though this year the team had no D1 committed players, the girls managed to achieve an identical record. Despite the varying roster compositions, each group was able to find a balance between players, and mastered one of the most important factors for a great season – team spirit. Both years differ in many ways, yet the teams ultimately achieved undefeated records and an impressive league ranking, proving that there is more than one road to victory, and each approach is equally successful.
