The Fountain, formerly The Kaleidoscope and The Mosaic before settling into its current name in 1986, is LS’s literary journal. Established in the 1960s, The Fountain produced physical annual issues that compiled student submissions of art, prose, and poetry before recently moving online following the COVID-19 pandemic; it has stayed there since. However, the many conflicts that arose thanks to the pandemic along with a growing lack of interest in the club altogether caused the literary journal to grow more and more irrelevant in LS’s school culture. However, this year, The Fountain staff have been and will be hard at work to do what they can to bring it back to what it once was.
This year, The Fountain plans to produce physical issues along with its online issues, similar to The Forum. “This year, we aim to regularly release themed issues and expand our digital platform,” explains Michelle Su, The Fountain’s current editor in chief. “It would also be fun to collaborate with other groups like art classes, Film Club, and theater troupes to see how we can combine multiple media types.”
Poetry editor Dorie Meunier also stated her opinion on the significance of this form of art being shared at LS: “It’s important, the way art affects people,” Meunier explains. “Art and stories affect people in a different way than news. It brings a certain beauty to the world.”
The themed deadline for fall and spooky-themed pieces will be open until October 8th, alongside a non-themed deadline for general submissions which lasts all year. The submissions form can be found under the “Activities & Clubs” tab on the LS website. Additionally, for those interested in helping behind the scenes, The Fountain’s staff meetings take place during Blue ACA and at 7:45 on Fridays in C348.
