Last Saturday, we attended the varsity girls and boys Kicks for Cancer games. Both games were amazing to watch, and there was so much energy and enthusiasm. During the girls game, we couldn’t help but notice negative talk from others in the crowd regarding how the girls were playing. The negative comments stopped as the boys team came on. Once their soccer game started, there was also a dramatic change in the number of people at the event as well as in the crowd, and supporters became more energized with people cheering and more engaged in the game. We believe, in our community, there is a need to better support girls’ sports. Our community can do this by actively showing up, being positive, and spreading awareness about these issues. This lack of support doesn’t only happen at Kicks for Cancer, but also at events such as Warriors for Warriors and other sports games. This is not at all to say our community should support the boy’s games any less, or that the girls are better, but we need to show up for everyone to make sure that their hard work is valued and appreciated.
