While driving around Sudbury, it is common to find people biking on the roads, especially on weekends. Though not many biking-related accidents happen, that doesn’t mean it isn’t possible. As both bikers and drivers, certain actions can be done to make our roads safer.
On August 29, 2024, on the eve of their sister’s wedding, former hockey players Johnny and Matthew Gaudreau passed away after being hit by a drunk driver while biking down a road in New Jersey. Left behind is a family grieving these losses, and two unborn children from each of the brothers who will never know their father or uncle.
Although as students you won’t be drinking and driving, it is also important to realize how your actions could endanger bikers. When passing a biker, give them as much space as possible and, whether you are in a rush or not, it is key to proceed carefully and cautiously.
While there is a lot of responsibility when it comes to driving, bikers should also remain vigilant. If you can avoid biking on the road, do so, especially as the rail trail becomes functional. If that is unavoidable, be aware of your surroundings. Get as far out of the way as possible when cars are behind you, and if you are biking in the dark, have the proper gear and lighting so drivers know of your presence.
Although this seems self-explanatory, incidents still happen; but if another incident like the one in New Jersey can be avoided, it is crucial to know your role. If your actions can prevent a tragedy, why not make a change?

On October 26, approximately 100 of the LSRHS Class of 1974 will be celebrating our 50 year “Golden” Reunion. As a graduate of that class who not only was the 1st METCO cheerleader, on the yearbook staff, language , art club and Outward Bound participant, graduation speaker and now a member of the planning committee of my first regunion, I prepare for the reunion and for the tour of the new school. Many of us haven’t been back in years and are looking forward to the October 26th tour, the reunion and a few may even make it to Friday’s game. As alums, we are travelling not only from the northeast, but from Georgia, California, Florida, Maryland, Ohio, South Carolina, Philadelphia, New Jersey, New York, and other states. In preparation for our trip, i have been perusing the school’s site and came across The Forum. I have enjoyed reading it and as a retired teacher, principal and curriculum coordinator, I wanted to congratulations on the publication. Thank you for recognizing the talents and skills of your classmates and thank you for using your voices to share the stories of students, staff, school and community! I look forward to reading more issues.
