The 2024 Presidential Election is just around the corner! It will take place on Tuesday, November 5, 2024. Voting is an important and necessary right held by 18-year-old citizens. The history of voting rights in the United States is a storied account of discrimination followed by perseverance and triumph. Because of this history, voting should be seen as a privilege. According to MLK Coordinator, Ms. Frommer, “Every year 4 million Americans turn 18, but fewer than half of them vote. However, once registered, they most likely follow through with voting.” Registering to vote is the first step in the political process of voting.
The Presidential election is not the only race to consider. There are many down-ballot races – State Representatives, State Senators and other local officials – which are also important to vote on. The LS Community is encouraging all students to get involved with the upcoming election. At age 18, older students can register to vote in this year’s election. But even if you cannot vote yet, there are other ways to get involved. If you are 16 or older, you can pre-register to vote in future elections. If you are younger than 16, do not hesitate to promote the idea of voting to your family members, friends, and other members in your community.
Here at LS, the MLK club, the Environmental club, and the Students for Social Justice club are coming together to encourage the student body to get involved in this year’s election. The MLK club is going to dedicate 3 days in October (16th, 17th, and 18th) to registration and
pre-registration for the upcoming election. You can also register to vote online by going to an official voting registration website (https://www.sec.state.ma.us/ovr/). Voting determines our future. It is a privilege that should not be taken for granted.
