Over February break, a small group of LS students and chaperones visited Costa Rica. During this trip, students and staff members learned more about the cultural experiences of the locals and got acquainted with the local wildlife. These adventures included kayaking on Lake Arenal, visiting La Fortuna Waterfall, and viewing the Arenal Hot Springs. Students were able to go zip lining through the Costa Rican canopy, visit the Santa Elena cloud forest, and watch crocodiles from a safari boat cruise as well. Over the trip, members of the group learned about various aspects of Costa Rican culture through several experiences, one of which was a local entertainment show, which included listening to marimba music and dancing. Another time, several students and chaperones got to try a traditional dinner. Overall, students had a wonderful time exploring different lifestyles and embracing Costa Rican experiences.
Across the world, another group – this one comprised of nineteen students and four teachers – traveled to New Zealand. The group spent fourteen days on the island, seven in the north and seven in the south, enjoying Maori and Kiwi culture as well as New Zealand’s beautiful scenery. Student travelers learned how to do the Haka, a traditional Maori dance, and paddled in a waka, a Maori canoe, and spent a night at a Marae, a Maori meeting place. Many outdoor adventures also took place, including hiking and zipling through the New Zealand canopies, black water rafting, and kayaking in the ocean. Student travelers also had the wonderful opportunity to meet a player from New Zealand’s National Rugby Union team, the All-Blacks. The All-Blacks logo, a silver fern, is a symbol of Kiwi culture and has been the rugby team’s logo since 1905. Overall, the two week trip to New Zealand was educational, fun and gave students and chaperones an opportunity to experience the culture and environment of people that live more than 9,000 miles away.
