Since joining the L-S cross-country team his freshman year, Ethan Sholk has quickly become a standout competitor for the Warriors.
Now a junior, Sholk ran an outstanding 4-kilometer race in just 12:46 this October, smashing the Lincoln-Sudbury 4k course record of 12:52 previously held by Westford Academy’s Paul Bergeron. Sholk’s impressive times have attracted the attention of college coaches and local media outlets, with Metrowest Daily News and the Boston Globe spotlighting Sholk’s spectacular races. “Consistency is really what has been key for me,” comments Ethan in regards to his success, “Stick with it and work hard and you’ll see results.”
Ethan tried a season of cross-country per the recommendation of his aunt, who believed he “had the makeup of a runner.” This genuine talent shined through during Ethan’s freshman season, when during the MIAA Divisional he ran a 5K in 17:16, finishing as Lincoln-Sudbury’s top runner. “That’s when it hit me that I had a talent for running” recalls Sholk.
“I’ve learned to love the process and enjoy running,” Supplementing his natural ability with intensive training, Sholk ramps up to 60 miles weekly during the off-season, preparation that has allowed him to reach new heights. On June 3rd, 2023, Sholk ran a PR of 4:26 in the mile, mere seconds short of the school record, and this September, Sholk ran a 15:48 5k compared to the reigning 15:34 L-S best. “I want to continue to stay motivated,” Ethan says, “I want to keep improving and not get caught up in previous accomplishments.”
Sholk’s continued passion and determination, combined with his relentless work ethic, have fueled his tremendous successes. As Ethan continues to grow, he is sure to earn himself a spot in the L-S record books and an opportunity to run at the collegiate level.
